Pursue Education in Canada.

Foreign Nationals can come to Canada to pursue an education at a designated learning institution of their choice. In order to do this, you must apply for and be admitted to a designed learning institution, following which you must apply to the IRCC for a study permit.

We at YIC work with you to obtain admission into the right institution and program, get a positive decision on your study permit, advise you on how to be compliant with the conditions of your study visa and works with you to create a plan for employment and/or settlement in Canada.

All successful applicants will be issued a study permit for the duration of their study program and an additional 90 days, this time will allow you to apply for an extension if needed or prepare to leave Canada.

Who can apply for a study permit?

You must meet the following requirements to be eligible to apply for a study permit to pursue studies in Canada:

  • You must be enrolled at one of the designated learning institutions.
  • You must provide proof that you have sufficient funds to cover the following costs:
    • Your tuition fees
    • Your living expenses and those of any family members who are coming to Canada with you and
    • The cost of return travel for you and any of your accompanying family members.
  • You must obey the law and have no previous criminal record (a police certificate may be required from applicants from some countries).
  • You must be in good health and you may be required to submit to a medical exam (for applicants from some countries).
  • You must prove to an officer that you will leave Canada once your study permit expires.

When do you not need a study permit?

  • Your Studies are short-term
    • Your program of study in Canada is 6 months or less;
    • The studies you will complete are not part of a longer program and;
    • You will complete your studies during the validity of your stay in Canada.

    If you are coming to Canada to pursue a program that is 6 months or less, you should apply for a visitor visa and have a valid status during your stay in Canada.

  • You are the family member of the staff of a foreign representative

    In order to fall under the study permit exemption, the foreign representative must have been accredited by the Global Affairs Canada.

  • Member of the foreign armed forces in Canada

    If you are a member of a foreign armed force in Canada on official duty, then you and your accompanying family members are exempt from the Study Permit requirement.

  • Minor Children in Canada

    Depending on the province or territory of your residence, a child under the age of 18 or 19 years, who is inside Canada can study in Canada without a study permit under the following circumstances:

    • They are refugees or refugee claimants or their parents are refugees or refugee claimants,
    • They are in kindergarten or
    • They are in pre-school, primary, or secondary school and inside Canada with a parent who has a valid work or study permit.

    Minor children pursuing education in Canada must have a valid visitor status, during their stay and studies in Canada.

You may be exempt from obtaining a study permit, but before you chose not to apply for it, consider the following benefits you will get with a study permit:

  • You may be able to work part-time and
    • If you have a study permit and are registered as a full-time student, you may be eligible to work on or off-campus.
    • Without a study permit, you cannot work
  • You may be able to continue your studies for a longer than anticipated duration, without any disruptions.
    • You can easily apply to extend your permit and be in implied status while awaiting processing.

  • A letter of acceptance from a Canadian Designated Institution.
  • Documents proofing your identity and any accompanying family member
  • Proof that you can financially support yourself and your accompanying family members in Canada.

How to submit your application:

It is highly recommended that you submit your application online but you can also submit a paper application. If you are eligible for the Student Direct Stream, you must apply online, there is no paper option available.
